Greater Rochester Professional Photographers

Welcome to the Greater Rochester Professional Photographers official website! We are an organization of like minded professionals dedicated to the advancement of the photographic arts in Upstate New York. We are one of eleven sections of Professional Photographers Society of New York State and we are an affiliate of Professional Photographers of America.

On this website you will find articles and links designed to help you find professional photographers for all your photographic needs. Whether you are getting married, looking for portrait work or just looking for some great pieces of visual artwork, you will find it here.

If you are a professional photographer who is interested in networking with other professionals, please join us every 2nd Wednesday of the month at Lumiere Photo, 100 College Avenue, Rochester, NY 14607. Meetings start at 7:00pm with a social hour starting at 6:00pm.

New Certified Professional Photographer Study Group

Network and learn with other Greater Rochester Professional Photographers in the next official CPP (Certified Professional Photographer) Study Group! You do not have to take the CPP exam to attend the group, however it is encouraged. Sign up to meet weekly with fellow GRPPsters to hone your craft and fine tune your skill as well as make new friends!

What?
CPP Study Group Orientation
A kickoff meeting to discuss the chapter outline/schedule, choose a Group Leader, pick a permanent date/time/location to meet weekly.
When?
January 11, 2011 6 PM
Where?
Panera Bread at 12 corners
Who?
Active and paid members of GRPP/PPSNYS who are interested in spending the winter geeking out with other Photographers in Rochester, NY and surrounding areas
What?

Paul Freeman will get you all started and will be the contact for this kickoff meeting. After that, you may ask Paul, Bob Steere or Brent Walton for guidance/ideas.

First some key points regarding the CPP certification.

** CPP Certification is through PPA and you need to be a PPA member in order to take the exam. http://www.ppa.com/
** GRPP & PPSNYS membership is also required.
http://www.ppsnys.com/main.html
** To be certified, you need to pass the exam and also the photo review. See the photo submission PDF attachment.
** You can be a member of the CPP study group without planning on taking the exam.

To prepare for the exam, our study group followed the 10 week chapter study outline from Brent Walton’s study group (why deviate from success?). The book is “Photography” ninth edition by London, Stone & Upton http://www.amazon.com/Photography-9th-Barbara-London/dp/0131752014. So the chapters for a particular week were assigned to our study group members, who would lead the discussion on the following week. This included a review of chapter questions at http://wps.prenhall.com/hss_london_photo_9/68/17419/4459318.cw/index.html.

January Greater Rochester Professional Photographers Meeting

Happy New Year, GRPPsters!

2010 was an amazing year for all of the Greater Rochester Professional Photographers:

* Membership and meeting attendance is up (nearly 20%!) at meetings

* Participation is up, with a full Board of Officers for the first time in years

* We have many new Certified Professional Photographers due to our very successful CPP study groups… Pat Luke, Scott Crist, Heather McKay, Danielle Zielinski, Terri Parthum, and Paul Freeman all received their CPP designation with others soon to follow!

* PPSNYS convention was a huge hit, our section had the most attendance from all NY State Photographers and we nearly beat all of New Jersey’s attendance numbers.

* A useful, SEO based web site where potential customers can find a Rochester NY Photographer and Rochester area Photographers can learn and grow together.

We have forward momentum in an down economy and this is due to the hard work and dedication of our Board of Officers, GRPP members and our Sponsors (Top Flight, Booksmart Studio and Hahn Photographic). In my opinion, we are a closer knit group of Professionally active Photographers with optimism and business savvy in our view of the future.

GRPP’s January Meeting will be on January 12, 2011 at Booksmart Studio from 6-9 pm as usual.

We will induct incoming officers, discuss year ahead, reflect on 2010 and all of the amazing progress…. and more. This will be a round table format in order for each member to discuss where you improved, where you are headed, ask for guidance, show off new products or albums, etc.
* Please feel free to bring anything you wish to sell or trade… garage sale style!

* Please feel free to bring a new album, product or business item that you would like to show off!

* Please bring a list of questions or topics that you would like to discuss (up to 3 per person).

Networking & Print Critique is from 6-7
* bring a food or beverage to share if you would like to
* bring up to 3 professionally printed 8x10s for critique

GRPP meeting begins at 7

Meeting is open to current paid PPSNYS/GRPP members. Non-members are charged $30 at the door or may join GRPP.

It has been my pleasure being the Greater Rochester Professional Photographers’ 2010 President! I was blessed to have a team of current Officers and past Board members who got me where I wanted to go with GRPP. Also, a special thank you to D. Brent Walton, CPP, for helping me get the CPP study groups off the ground!

November Meeting- “The Business of Aesthetics”

Brady Dillsworth and Paul D. Van Hoy II from ‘WPW: Wedding Photography Workshop” have pioneered an incredible website filled with information for professional photographers. They hold workshops to further educate as well and we are very lucky to learn from them!

They technically describe their writings as “The Business of Aesthetics,” however, a much more accurate overview is that they are “teaching people how to maximize profit while minimizing mistakes!”

“We have each made just about every wrong move known to man, yet somehow managed to build a respectable business!
Our goal is to make sure that photographers know they are not alone as they navigate the tricky path of selling, marketing, investing and shooting :)

GRPP meeting is on Wednesday November 10th – Networking & Print Critique is from 6-7; 7pm Meeting begins.

* bring a food or beverage to share if you would like to
* bring up to 3 professionally printed 8x10s for critique

Meeting is open to current paid members. Non-members are charged $30 at the door or may join GRPP.

Talent Exchange Program with Pierre Stephenson! A photographic Halloween learning extravaganza!

Only a few more days….. You can pay at the door, but please let Sue know you are coming!

Hi!   As you may recall, one of my tasks as the Programs Chair with Greater Rochester Professional Photographers is to bring in a professional speaker to learn from; as a whole day(s) experience. This is called a Talent and Exchange Program (T.E.P.).    I’m really really excited about the photographer we have been able to bring here to learn from!

His name is Pierre Stephenson (www.pierresportraitart.com) and he will be speaking about :
“Molding your vision”: Lighting and Posing
“Lovin’ the Nightlife”: Low light photography
“The Iconic You”: Breaking your barriers

We’re doing a combination of all three programs on October 31st (Halloween!) We’ll start off the day at Hahn Photographic  with “Molding Your Vision” – Lighting and Posing program as well as touching on some of the more inspirational and motivating parts of “The Iconic You” before we delve into “The Changing World of Low Light Photography” where we’ll  go out shooting downtown on Halloween. It’s going to be an awesome day!

It looks like sunset is just after 6 PM on the 31st, so timing wise we think we can expect to go until about 8 PM with a little bit later start at 11am for registration; starting at noon.  He also wants to emphasize that even though weddings are his specialty this program is not wedding specific. These alternative lighting and posing techniques can be applied to all areas.

The all day program of Halloween fun and learning  is open to all professional photographers; regardless of membership.

Please see the brochures and fill them out as soon as you’ve decided to join us; you don’t want to miss out on this incredible extraordinary opportunity!

Thanks everyone!:)

Canon Explorer of Light, Ken Sklute will share his perspective, teach you to see and help you to be more in touch with your creative vision. We routinely pass magnificent locations without stopping because we are not really seeing what is there. Sklute will explain how he goes about finding locations, subjects and photographic environments that yield award winning results. Together, we will explore creative ways of composing. You will learn to see light that carves your subject with grace, depth and dimension. Sklute will motivate and ignite your passion, enabling you to take your craft to a new level of excellence. Handouts will be made available.” All levels.
