June Meeting: Be Yourself = Be Successful

Erich Camping is a genuinely sweet and compassionate person. Every time I spend time with him I am relaxed by him, and am both intrigued and excited from the suggestions he shares with me. He is a true professional and it is my extreme pleasure to welcome him to our meeting this month.

He will be sharing his thoughts on successful client meetings which pertains to any business that is structured in having to meet with people. He’s got great ideas for all of us; whether we have the luxury of meeting clients in a studio, or having to meet at a coffee shop.

He reminds us that our clients are meeting with us because they already like our work, and that they simply need to ‘confirm their preconceived notion’ about who they think we are.

There is probably nothing more important to your photography business than conducting a successful meeting with a new client. If your meeting goes well, not only do you get a new client…but that client could potentially lead to dozens of referrals in the future. BUT, if your meeting goes badly, you not only lose the client, but it could lead to a bad reputation that could COST you dozens of new clients in the future.

Come and learn from one of the best ~ he will definitely give you an ‘aha’ / light bulb moment that you can’t believe you didn’t think of!
:)

Focus on a GRPPster – Patrick Luke

Pat Luke of Luke Photography has recently achieved his Certified Professional Photographer (CPP) certification from the Professional Photographers of America (PPA)! Congratulations Pat!!! The certification consists of a written exam as well as a 20 image review by the Professional Photographers of America (PPA).

Due to his crowning achievement, Pat is our newest Focus on a GRPPster interview!

Where do you get inspiration?
If you are open to it, you can be inspired by anything.  I get inspired when I watch other craftsmen work, no matter if they are a photographer, painter, or tailor.  Watching someone who is really excels at their craft can really be astounding, and makes me want to be better than I am and try just a little harder.

How did you know you were “successful”?
“Success” is whatever you define it to be.  I knew many years ago that I was personally successful because of the good will that was heaped upon me by friends and strangers at a very difficult time in my life.  I figured I was artistically successful about 10 years ago, when I started being happy with the work I was producing.  And financially successful….well…let’s just see if I can help pay the mortgage next month; that would be a good start.

Where do you want to be in 5 years?
I hope to be the first photographer that people think of when they want an important portrait created.

How did you get into photography?
I’ve always been an artist, and I knew in high school when I started noticing the beauty in little snippets of our daily life…the way light struck the most ordinary things…and I wanted to capture it.  I can paint and draw, but photography appealed to me more than any other creative outlet.

Do you have any formal education?
I have a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in biology, which, as you know, helps immensely in my photographic career  L .  In the last 5-6 years, I’ve gotten so much from attending the week-long workshops at Hobart College through PPSNYS.  Being in a small class, basically 1-on-1 with some incredible instructors is more education than you get reading any web site or book.  I felt the earth move (not in the Biblical sense) when I got to spend a week with Joseph and Louise Simone.

What has been your greatest achievement?
Getting out of bed today was a good start.  But I can’t say I have any “great” accomplishments….yet.

How do you stay fresh and creative?
I’m always looking to see what other photographers are producing, to push myself even further.  I look through the Flickr website a lot, and realize that there are a lot of amateur photographers out in this world that are lot better than you or I will ever be.

What is the best piece of gear in your camera bag?
Whatever is available.  Like my good friend MacGuyver once said, “Use what you’ve got”.  When you really know what you’re trying to do, and know how to get it, the tools you use really don’t matter.

What do you wish you knew when you began?
I really wish I knew more about business.  It’s been said that 80% of photography businesses that fail do so because they were bad business people, not bad photographers.  Especially now that I’ve finally tackled this full-time, it’s an education that I wish I didn’t have to learn on-the-job.

3 favorite non-photo hobbies?
I enjoy kayaking, woodworking, and channeling my inner MacGuyver.  People wonder why I waste my time making things when I could more easily buy them.  Not only do I enjoy “making” photographs, but I enjoy making anything.  I get huge amounts of personal satisfaction out of designing and making anything….and I mean “anything”.  I never lost that pride that you felt, as a 6-yr. old, when you said, “Mommy, look what I made!”.  I call it pride…other people just tell me to grow up.

Best piece of software?
I do really prefer to get it all correct in the camera, but I do rely on Photoshop to extend my artistic vision in ways that the camera can’t record.

What is the best business tip you have been given?

Don’t spend more than you have.  It’s simple advice, but how many people can stick to it?

Here are the images submitted for Pat’s CPP image review

May Meeting – Tomas Flint

Greater Rochester Professional Photographer’s May Meeting Agenda:

Location is Booksmart Studio, May 12, 2010 from 6-9 PM.

We are so fortunate to have the opportunity to listen and be inspired by Tomas Flint for this meeting. He was recently named one of the top 3 Wedding photographers in the world by ISPWP and he’s right here in our home town!

Tomas is like no one else I have ever met ~ extremely compassionate, down to earth, and real. He will be speaking about “discovery, love, risk, connection, personal evolution…all of the things that make us individuals and our work a direct reflection of that”. It would not be about a fancy action pack or work flow shortcut, but about growth and expression, evolution and acceptance. You will need to clear your minds of hoping to hear about any short cuts, or golden tickets. Just be ready to be truly inspired.

Networking & Print Critique is from 6-7
* bring a food or beverage to share if you would like to
* bring up to 3 professionally printed 8×10s for critique

GRPP meeting begins at 7

Meeting is open to current paid members. Non-members are charged $10 at the door or may join GRPP.

* Reminder * we will be drawing two “Sam DeNoto” $100 scholarships to the PPSNYS Summer Workshop at this meeting and you must be present to win!

About Tomas Flint:

“The inspiration for my work comes from an awareness of the connection that binds us all.  We are all flowers in a magnificent garden – each contributing a unique energy that makes the whole so much more than the sum of its parts.

As a photographer, I strive to channel the energy of my subject into my lens, through my heart, and back out again.  My goal is to be honest with what I am experiencing.  To dismiss any preconcieved notions and approach each event – each frame – with the curiosity of a child.  In doing this, I am successful in celebrating life in all of it’s glory.  I am paying tribute to the greatest gift of all.

Weddings provide me with a canvas to paint your masterpiece.  Eager anticipation.  True love.  The meshing of yesterday and today, and the promise of tomorrow.  These are the brilliant flashes of life that continually remind me of how lucky I am to be emersed in such unfiltered human emotion.  It brings me great satisfaction to work with real people on real days creating imagery and forming bonds that will last a lifetime.

This is why I do what I do.  …and why I plan to continue doing so for a long time.”

Today is Earth Day, so think about Greener Photography…

Rochester, NY Wedding and Portrait Photographer, McKay’s Photography is very excited to announce their acceptance into Greener Photography’s Leadership circle! Heather McKay has been adding new products with sustainability in mind for years. McKay’s Photography is also always looking to her vendors to offer alternatives to the status quo as she has built the business. The main album company used by McKay’s Photography is Capri Albums and they were chosen just because they had non-leather alternatives at the time when not many other companies did. Thankfully, environmental consciousness has become trendy and the options are growing by the minute!

In addition to the products sold, Heather has been running her business with green practices in mind from the beginning. This year, however, McKay’s Photography will continue this path with more frequent use of electronic invoicing of clients as well as marketing and advertising initiatives. McKay’s Photography is the first studio in Rochester, NY to offer digital files on USB (or Jump) drives instead of DVDs/CDs and has lead the way with packaging vendors to offer boxes for this media.

Heather is very proud that McKay’s Photography was awarded the Leadership Circle of Membership with Greener Photography with having only done what came naturally and organically with the greater good in mind.

GreenerPhotography.org Core Values:

Photography is an art form that allows each of us to interpret the world around us. The nature of our tools and traditional materials makes photography a high-tech field; it is an energy-intensive activity. We believe that we can make our high-tech field more green by implementing environmentally-friendly practices, and encouraging suppliers to do the same.

Annie Leibovitz is coming to Syracuse University!

An evening with world-renowned photographer and documentarian Annie Leibovitz will culminate a spectacular 2009-10 University Lectures season at Syracuse University on Thursday, April 29. This lecture is an addition to the previously announced University Lectures schedule.

Leibovitz will share selections of her work during the lecture, which begins at 7:30 p.m. in Hendricks Chapel. The event is free and open to the public; reduced-rate parking is available in the Irving Garage. A sign language interpreter and CART will be available during the lecture.

The lecture is sponsored in cooperation with the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications.

Leibovitz began her career as a photojournalist for Rolling Stone in 1970 while she was a student at the San Francisco Art Institute. Her photos have appeared regularly on magazine covers ever since, and her large and distinguished body of work encompasses some of the most well-known portraits of our time.

Leibovitz’s first major assignment was for a cover story on John Lennon. In 1973, she became chief photographer for Rolling Stone, where she shot 142 covers and published photo essays on scores of stories, including her memorable accounts of the resignation of Richard Nixon and of the 1975 Rolling Stones tour. In 1983, she joined the staff of the revived Vanity Fair and was established as the foremost rock music photographer and an astute documentarian of the social landscape.

At Vanity Fair, and later at Vogue, she developed a large body of work—portraits of actors, directors, writers, musicians, athletes and political and business figures, as well as fashion photographs—that expanded her collective portrait of contemporary life.

Several collections of Leibovitz’s work have been published, and exhibitions of her work have appeared at museums and galleries all over the world. She is the recipient of many honors and recognitions. In 2009, she received the International Center of Photography’s Lifetime Achievement Award, ASME’s first Creative Excellence Award and the Centenary Medal of the Royal Photographic Society in London. Leibovitz has been designated a Living Legend by the Library of Congress.

Now in its ninth season, University Lectures is a cross-disciplinary lecture series that brings to the University individuals of exceptional accomplishment. The series is supported by the generosity of the University’s trustees, alumni and friends. The lectures are free and open to the public.

The Office of University Lectures welcomes suggestions for future speakers. To recommend a speaker, or for additional information about University Lectures, please contact Esther Gray in the Office of Academic Affairs at 443-2941 or eegray@syr.edu. April Meeting-Print critique

Hopefully you submitted some prints for competition at the PPSNYS conference and/or were able to listen in on the discussions from the judges panel.   It’s an incredible opportunity to learn what it takes to win a competition!  As a follow up to the real thing at conference, we’re going to hold our own critique with our expert judges right here in GRPP!

Prior to the meeting, please submit 2-4 digital, print competition ready .jpg files sized at 8×12, 72 dpi to be displayed on screen (unless you already have them printed and mounted professionally)  I will collect the files so they’re all together on a jump drive.  Please send them to sue@seganphoto.com

The **MOCK** Print Competition  will be conducted just like a real print salon. The images will be displayed one at a time and will be scored by the judges. This competition will be as anonymous as you want it to be, but after an image is scored it will also be critiqued and you will have an opportunity to ask the judges questions about their comments (unlike a real Print Competition), so you need to feel comfortable in knowing that everyone will know it’s yours, and that’s great!  Print critique is the best time to learn.

Networking is from 6-7
* bring a food or beverage to share if you would like to for mingling; everyone appreciates treats! :)

GRPP meeting begins at 7
We’re also going to share some stories and pictures from the conference which was a huge hit so feel free to send any images you have to Scott Crist: scott@scottcrist.com and Heather McKay: hmckay@mac.com

Hope to see you there!
