GRPP-Critique on Flickr

Dear GRPP Members,

As you know, during our monthly meetings we have a time set up for you to bring in your image prints to be critiqued by members of the
group as a member benefit.  We will continue to do this for any member that brings prints to the meeting.

What we’d like to do is extend that critique to a digital area where we can all give input to the image during non-meeting times.  This is just another avenue to have your images viewed by your peers and receive feedback.  GRPP is about learning and growing as professionals.  It will continue to be a member’s only benefit.

With that in mind we’d like to tell you about a new feature on the GRPP website.  In the Links dropdown you’ll find a new link to “GRPP-Critique on Flickr” which will take you to an invitation only Group on Flickr.   All current GRPP members will be receiving an invitation to join this group.  If you don’t already have a Flickr ID, go ahead and get one, it’s free!  Once you join the GRPP-Critique Group on Flickr, you can start uploading images to your Flickr profile and then add them to the Group Pool.   Other members will be notified that an image was added to the group pool and can start giving feedback.

Everyone in the group is welcome to give a critique of the images uploaded to the group.  Here is a helpful website to understand How to Critique a Photo.

Right now our membership dues are only $85 for limited time if you’ve never been a member of GRPP. It would be a great time to join and take advantage of this new feature.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Terri Parthum-GRPP Membership Chairperson.

June 2011 Meeting – Greater Rochester Professional Photographers (GRPP)

Because of the prevalence of video capabilities in digital SLRs and the low price of digital video cameras, many photographers are incorporating video footage into their bag of tricks when photographing weddings and portraits.

This month’s featured speaker is Dave Duprey from Duprey Video Productions (http://dupreyvideo.com/)

Dave is a veteran videographer with over 20 years of experience, and will speak to us about tips and techniques that will help us shoot video intelligently and also… tips on the editing process.  I have it on good authority from his daughter, GRPP member Lori Coleman, that Dave is quite talented and has plenty of great tips to share with us.  :-)    They have also been working together on several photo/video fusion sessions, which you might find plenty interesting.

Those of us that have photographed weddings long enough all have horror stories of working with bad videographers.  Well, wouldn’t you know it, videographers have as many (or more) stories to share about bad photographers.  Dave will share some of his stories (hopefully you are not mentioned in any of them) and maybe we can pick up a few tips on how not to be “that photographer”.

Date: Wednesday, June 8, 2011
Location: Booksmart Studio, 250 N. Goodman Street, Rochester, NY (near Village Gate and Memorial Art Gallery)

The social hour and print critique will begin at 6:00.  The GRPP business portion of the meeting will begin at approximately 6:40pm, and Dave’s program will begin promptly at 7:00pm.

We’ll order pizza again as we’ve done the last couple of meetings (donations are gladly accepted), but make sure you save at least $5 for the 50/50 raffle.  All it takes is $5 and a dream.

May 2011 Meeting – Greater Rochester Professional Photographers (GRPP)

Give and Take

We are bringing back the always-popular Give and Take meeting.  This gives everyone in attendance a chance to ask questions and get answers.  There will be a panel of experienced photographers that will provide answers and suggestions, but suggestions can come from anyone in attendance.  This year’s panel will include: Deb Woodard, Pat Luke and Kent and Kathie Campbell.  Folks, that’s over 70 years of combined experience.  I know what you’re thinking…we all started when we were 4 years old.

However, it is not a free-for-all.  The format of the meeting has always been to select a couple of topics, and ask GRPP members to e-mail the questions to the Program Chair ahead of time, so we make sure we have a good allotment of questions and can prep some of the discussion ahead of time.

This year, the topics will be:

  • Working with Clients  (The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly)
  • Marketing  (The Never Ending Story)
  • Photographic Techniques  (Do the Right Thing)

If you don’t want to bring up questions during the meeting, please send your specific questions to:  info@lukephotography.com and they can be asked anonymously.
Date: Wednesday, May 11, 2011
Time: 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm
Location: Booksmart Studio, 250 N. Goodman Street, Rochester, NY

The socializing and print critique begins at 6:00 pm, and the business portion of the GRPP meeting will begin at 6:30 pm. The panel discussion will begin promptly at 7:00 pm.

We will be having a 50/50 raffle, so bring your lucky Easter Bunny rabbit’s foot and a few bucks, and walk away with a little more cash in your pocket than you came with.

Rochester rocked Photo North East!

First of all, I have to send out an ENORMOUS  Thank You to the volunteer photographers within the Professional Photographers Society of New York State for putting on the incredible ‘Photo North East‘ convention ~ WOW!  Honestly, we have no idea how much thought goes into these learning experiences…all the work done to prepare, plan, and facilitate; it seems un-imaginable and I know that all of our members are extremely grateful for the opportunity that they give us.

Next years date has been set and we’re already looking forward to it with excitement; eager to learn more!
:)

So, to explain the title of this blog post more in depth…we ‘rocked’ the convention because we had two of our extremely talented Rochester photographers chosen as Guest Speakers!  It truly is no surprise, and I know it’s just the beginning for them.  They were meant to speak and share their excitement for photography with others and we’re so thankful to catch a glimpse into that with them.  They both did an incredible job and received raving reviews!

Congratulations to Pat Luke, who’s seminar taught photographers how to make their own equipment with Macguver like accessories; so clever!

Comments:
“Patrick does a great program with enthusiasm. He had lots to share and filled up the entire time block with great information.”

“Enjoyed “MacGyver” ALOT! Today, with funds short, he offered low budget help in the world of expensive equipment.”

“Patrick Luke’s “What Would MacGyver Do?” class was great!  I loved the fact that he said his Sponsor was  ”Home Depot – Aisle 8!!!”

“Great Job Pat a lot of great ideas to use is last minuet back up when an Item get broke or lost.”

And Congratulations to Heather McKay, who’s seminar opened our eyes to the world of professional albums, and the importance on what they represent as an heirloom to our couples.  SO important to remember and share.

Comments:
“WONDERFUL!!!!!!  This was MUCH more than I expected.  Heather is an energetic, expressive speaker and her sales tips were very helpful.  I feel much better able to sell albums now.”

“Awesome! Heather was great!”

“She did a fantastic job! Very confident in her style and work.”

“Eye opening on how to handle the sales process and simplify.”

As if that weren’t enough, one of our veteran members, and long time volunteer extraordinaire, Deb Woodard, received the Professional Photographers of America National Award!  We are SO incredibly proud of her and are SO thankful that she has been recognized in this extraordinary way.

Congratulations Deb!!!
We’re SO lucky to have you be a special part of the Greater Rochester Professional Photographers!

Besides all the classes we took throughout the weekend, there was a Toga party!  So funny, and we had a great time!

Thanks to all of you who attended!  The networking and spending time together is a HUGE benefit when you decide  to  make the trip when attending conferences like these.  I genuinely appreciate the friendships we’ve made.  Hope to see you there again next year!

April’s Greater Rochester Professional Photographers (GRPP) meeting

Color Management for Professional Photographers

When other photographers start talking to you about color profiles, gamut, color space, or LUTs, do your eyes glaze over?  Really?  I thought it was just me.

Do you say to yourself: “My lab does all my color correction.  I don’t have to know anything about color management”?

By the end of our next meeting, you’ll realize how wrong you are.  We are pleased to bring you Mark Reiman, a color scientist from Kodak who has over 20 years of experience in digital imaging systems engineering.  Not only is he a scientist, but he’s also a photographer and speaks to photographers all over the world about color management.  Mark’s down-to-earth speaking style will allow you to understand profiling and color management of your SLR, inkjet printer and images that you send to your lab better than you ever have before.

And you’ll never end up with photographs of blue bananas or green Santa Claus suits again.   That is, unless you want to.

Date:  Wednesday, April 13, 2011
Time:  7:00 pm – 8:30 pm
Location:  Booksmart Studio, 250 N. Goodman Street, Rochester, NY

The socializing and print crtitique begins at 6:00 pm, and the business portion of the GRPP meeting will begin at 6:30 pm.  Mark’s presentation will begin promptly at 7:00 pm.

Columns…Get Your Columns Here!

A local photographer is moving out-of-state and will be leaving two of his beloved props behind.
He didn’t want to let them go free on a farm here in upstate, so he wants them  to go to a good home…or at least to a studio that will use them.

They are two plaster columns that he used while photographing proms:
24″ tall – $30
35″ tall  – $40

Please contact Pat Luke at (585) 943-5814 or at info@lukephotography.com if you are interested.

February’s Greater Rochester Professional Photographer’s (GRPP) Meeting

A Recipe for Dramatic Lighting

Lighting Like A Drama Queen King

February’s meeting of GRPP will feature a familiar old face…strike that…a “familiar” face, as Pat Luke will be sharing his “MacGyver” approach to lighting both in the studio and on-location to create drama and interest in his portraits.

In the past, Pat, a Certified Professional Photographer (CPP) and the owner of Luke Photography, has shown us many of the efficient and cost-effective pieces of lighting and studio equipment he has built to solve problems he has come across.  During this meeting, he will take it one step further toward insanity by showing live demonstrations of how he uses several of his favorite pieces of equipment to come up with intriguing and interesting lighting on his subjects, which include high school seniors, families and children.

You don’t need a lot of equipment…or expensive equipment…to get great results that your customers will be blown away by.  You “do” need to open up your mind and really see what it is that you want to do, then determine the best way to get there.  As MacGyver knows, the best way is not always the most obvious way.
